The Journey 90: Transformation in my family life
Read: 1 Samuel 1, 2
CAN YOU BE A MENTEE?. Dr. Anthony Rodriguez, is the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Diversity at Drexel University, College of Medicine. He is a famous doctor who always talks about the importance of becoming a mentee so that one can get guidance in life and humble oneself to learn from others so as to make significant progress in life. Today he has decided to become a mentor so that he can offer guidance for aspiring doctors, something that he received as a mentee. Recalling his childhood life he says that he grew up with a single mother, and hence the mother was very careful to see that her children does not fall sick as there was nothing known as preventive care in the early 1960's. So, every August before the start of the school year, he would be taken to the doctors to our shots, so that he was healthy for school. He says he can still see himself at age 6 standing on the white exam table talking his pediatrician. From then on his desire was to become a doctor. Dr. Rodriguez says that if we need to move up in life we talk to people along the way, get advice, and finally get good mentors and advisors. A good mentor can make a great deal of difference in the path to success. I think this is what is needed in Christian life too. A family tries to give the best to the child, but never in terms of a good mentor. So let us think as a family have we given our children good mentors or as individuals have we tried to be a mentee?
This week we are meditating on the theme “ Transformation in our family life” based on the family of Elkanah and Hannah. God finally answers the prayers of Hannah and she is blessed with a son whom she named “Samuel”. Later as she promised to the Lord, Hannah brings her son to the house of the Lord at Shiloh, to put him under the guidance of Eli. Here is a mother who has dedicated her child to the Lord making a conscious effort to give the child a mentor in his faith life. Here is also lesson for Samuel that if he needs to be working faithfully to the Lord he first has to become a mentee. The word “mentor” is derived from the Greek word meaning “enduring”. It refers to a special relationship between an older person who shares his wisdom and a younger person. If we need to grow in our faith living , it is desirable that we experience both roles, the roles of a mentor and a mentee. But today we live in a world, where people are not ready to submit to one another and learn from one another. We like to teach others, but not learn from them. As a clergy the greatest gift that God has given to me, is the wisdom, the knowledge, the skills, the personal experience of so many friends who are young and old, who have taught me valuable lessons in my faith journey and in my ministry. Hence let us this day pray that we humble ourselves so that every day in life we become a mentee, to learn from others, to humble ourselves so that we all become faithful servants of our Lord.
Want to grow in the knowledge of the Lord and be useful for His kingdom?– Then get ready to become a mentee
