Courage in witnessing Christ
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (15)
Paul was imprisoned under Emperor Nero and during that time he wrote the second letter to Timothy. His friends even had a hard time to find out where he was being kept. Paul knew that his work was done and that his life was coming to an end. Timothy was his fellow worker who was like a son to Paul and we read in Philippians 2:22 “But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served with me in the work of the gospel”. Paul was concerned about the welfare of the church during this time of persecution under Nero, and he advised Timothy to guard the gospel, and to preserve it. He also advised him to continue preaching and if necessary, to suffer for the Gospel. These days gave the followers of Jesus a difficult time to preach the gospel without corrupting it. The believers were inspired by the power of the word of God. Amidst of the persecution the believers depended on the Word of God and the power of the Holy Spirit. Being witnesses in persecution is one of the proofs that show that we are the true disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. Many Christians find it difficult to be in terms with this issue of persecution.
This passage clearly assures the importance of the Word of God and its authority. Paul is saying “Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” Amidst of these difficult time of persecution the strength of a believer is to look unto the scripture and receive the power from it to walk in faith through this. All the believers are to be equipped to do the good works by the scriptures.
How do we use the scripture in our daily lives? Is the scripture equipping us to produce the good works? Is the scripture giving us the power to remain faithful amidst of our struggles? Paul advised Timothy to hold on to the poser of the scripture amidst of the persecution. Paul said the scripture will make you wise and will lead you to salvation. Let us understand the authority of the scripture and depend on the power of the God’s word to go forward in faith through all difficult situations.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, be with us in our difficult days. Give us the power to depend on your scripture and to follow it. Amen
