Apostle’s advice
" I am writing to you..."
This passage is interesting because Apostle John has something to say to each Christian no matter where they are in their walk with God. He addresses children, young men, and fathers. This has less to do with age, and more to do with spiritual maturity.
To children, John says "I write to you little children because your sins have been forgiven for his name's sake"(v12) and "because you have known the Father"(v14) If you are young in the faith, like a child, spend time realizing that you are forgiven and get to know God as your Father. Most young children think of their father as a real life hero. Our earthly fathers may or may not deserve that title but our Heavenly Father surely does. Revel in how great your Heavenly Father is. He has you in the center of His hand.
To young men, John says "I write to you because you have overcome the evil one."(v13) "You are strong and the word of God abides in you." (v14). When there is a war, it is not the children or the old men who go out as soldiers - it is the young men. Now is the time for you to actively fight the evil one. Fight against sin in your own life. Fight against injustice in this world. Give of your time, energy and money generously and maybe even recklesly for His sake. Study God's word and what it means for your life today. Be strong!
To fathers, John says "I have written to you because you have known him who is from the beginning." (v13,14) This is the benefit of having lived long with God - you 'know Him' now. You know how God has been with you through the good times and the bad. You know how to be with Him when He's silent and when He's talking. You know there is a reason for every day you are alive - even if it is only to share your experiences, your wisdom and to pray for the young ones. And if you are near death, you know that this life is only the beginning of eternity with our God.
No matter where you are in your
faith journey, know that God is with you and His word is relevant. Enjoy
walking with God today and spend a moment thinking of the plans He has for you
- plans to show you who He is, to grow you, to fight with you, and to take you
into eternity with Him.
Prayer: Dear Father, in every stage of my life, help me to enjoy You and to enjoy what You have for me to do today.
Prayer: Dear Father, in every stage of my life, help me to enjoy You and to enjoy what You have for me to do today.
Thought
for the day:
Have God's perspective on your life today. What are HIS great plans for YOU?
