Cord of Love
“Though one may be overpowered, two can
defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” –
Ecclesiastes 4:12
Have
you ever thought about the strength of a rope? If it is simply one
strand, it can easily be broken, if its two strands its stronger but it might
unravel. However a rope of 3 strands is strong and cannot unravel.
In the same way God created man and women to be united together and held strong
through his love.
Though one may be overpowered, two can defend
themselves:
There is three ways to look at this verse, emotionally, physically and
spiritually. First emotionally, the Bible speaks through many verses that
it is not good for man/women to be alone. When an individual is alone,
they become lonely and sad without a companion. Having a companion
through marriage, allows two people to share their pain, joy and dreams
together. On the physical aspect, think about a traveler who is being
robbed. If the person is alone, they can be easily overpowered as
compared to someone traveling in a group. Also if the person is going
through a struggle, having a spouse to share your pain can console the
individual. On a spiritual level one person can easily fall into sin or
away from God without the support and encouragement of a companion.
Having a spouse and praying together can increase the spiritual growth
individually and strengthen the marriage.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken: This verse talks about the union
between man, women and God through marriage. Without God’s presence the
marriage cannot grow. A marriage can easily break if it’s not
tightly bound by love, forgiveness, loyalty, patience and trust, which are all
provided through God’s grace. When one spouse is going through a tough
time, or if the marriage is rocky, prayer can strengthen and save the relationship.
God unties man and women through His grace, which sustains the marriage.
Reflect back on your marriage, is your marriage a cord of two or three
strands? Is your relationship with your spouse enabling you to grow
spiritually? Can you feel the presence of God and His love in your
marriage?
Prayer: Thank you God for our relationship and for binding our
marriage through your love. Amen
Thought of the day: When a relationship is rooted in
Christ, it can never be broken!
