Christ the Way the Truth and Life
“ This we proclaim concerning the word of
life”.(V.1)
Apostle John wrote
this letter to encourage the faith community to live in fellowship with God and
fellowship with each other. He wanted them to know the truth through Jesus
Christ, that he himself was witness too. He wanted to strengthen them in the
true faith, then they would recognize false ideas and teachings. Some people in
these communities believed wrong things about the person of Christ. They denied
the deity, human nature and union of human and divine natures. John styles
Jesus as the Word of Life. Word is the index of mind. Word is the expression of
mind. Christ, as One in the self-existing Essence, speaks out the mind of the
external father. It is as this essential Word all the mind of God is opened. In
the beginning was the word and the Word was with god(Jn1:1).
In his letter John
presents Jesus as the Word of Life (1Jn1:1). There are two Greek words for
life, bios and zoe. Bios refers everyday life on earth. But zoe is the higher
life that is eternal life related to Christ. Some people taught the body is bad
but the spirit is good True life is in the spirit is good. So it does not
matter how we live in the body. They thought that their evil actions did not
matter. John shows such ideas are false. According to him, belief and behavior
are important in Christian life. Life and light are the qualities of the Word.
The Bible explains the way and walk are metaphors to describe the life lived in
accordance with the will and desire of God. Way and walk express the life style
of a person. How to walk and where to walk are important in the spiritual
journey. Since Jesus is the way we have to follow his path - a way of
discipline and a way of discipleship. Lord hates the ways of the evil people,
but he loves those who do what is right (Pro.15:9).
Since the beginning
of time there are many men of God who walk with God. These individuals have
personal relationship with God that is trust and dependency on God. God desires
fellowship with man. But when sin came to man’s life, his personal friendship
with God is ceased. Sin is not just what we do wrong- the deeper part of sin is
the lack of trust in God. John says that God is light in Him there is no
darkness at all. John uses the darkness to mean evil acts, sin and error. He
uses the word light to mean all that is good, holy and right. Light shows the
right way. Light removes darkness, gives life and growth. That is why the sages
of ancient India prayed, Lord lead us from untruth to truth, from darkness to
light from death to life. In 1John 1:7 we read, But if we walk in the light as
he himself is in the light…. As Christians we are called to walk uprightly.
Light coming from god belongs to God.
Prayer : O Lord Jesus Christ help us to
follow your Way, understand your Truth and experience your life.....
Amen.
Thought for the
day: Only love makes God
real and brings Him to us.
