Word for the day by Christian Education Forum
WISDOM AND
KNOWLEDGE ARE GIFTS OF GOD
“How can a
young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word” (V.9)
Question: “How can a
young man keep his ways pure?” The Psalmist who raises this question also
offers an answer. The answer is: “By living according to the word of
God.” (V.9) Growing up is not easy for young people these days.
They confront influences, pressures and social norms that are far different
from those of the previous generations. Every day, they face choices that
have lasting consequences in their lives. Peer
pressure, the need to succeed in a highly competitive world and upholding moral
and spiritual values are some of the challenges they face constantly.
Where could young
people turn to for right answers to pressing questions in life? Many
would turn to their friends or to the Internet or elsewhere with no guarantee
for sure and lasting answers. The Psalmist’s advice to men and women both young
and old is: “Turn to the word of God.” Temptations are part of our
lives. No one is exempt from it and temptations often arrive at the
weakest moments in one’s life. Even Jesus had to face temptations.
But he defeated Satan with the effective weapon of the word of God.
The Psalmist
goes on to share with his readers how he translates his precepts into
practice. He seeks God with all his heart and he prays for God’s help in
obeying His commandments. (v 10) He has “hidden” or infused into his
heart the commandments of God as a defense against sinning. (v 11) He
constantly recounts God’s laws and rejoices in His commandments as one would
rejoice in riches. (v 13-14) He meditates on God’s precepts and takes delight
in His decrees. (v 15-16) What a testimony!
It is helpful to
examine some more references to the word of God. Psalm 119:105 says,
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” To David, the
ordinances of the Lord are “more precious than gold and sweeter than
honey.” (Psalm 19:10) He confesses that “By them is your servant
warned; in keeping them is great reward.” (Psalm 19:11) Psalm 1 declares
that a man blessed by God will be meditating His word both day and night!
The book of Hebrews says: “The word of God is living and active, sharper than
any double edged sword.” (Hebrews 4:12) Peter exhorts us, “Like
newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in
your salvation.” (1 Peter 2:2)
Now let us pause
and ask the question again: “How can a man or woman, young or old can make his
or her ways pure?” We know the answer: By living according to the
infallible word of God.
Thought for the day: The word of God is indispensable for our spiritual
growth and maturity.
Prayer: Lord, help us to enjoy
the boundless benefits that flow from obeying your commandments. Amen.
