taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to
the people, a light to the nations
Isaiah speaks of the promise from the Lord to His chosen Servant, Jesus Christ. God knew of the hardships Christ was to suffer in His earthly ministry, and this passage provides a sense of reassurance and comfort amongst such trials and tribulations that Jesus Christ would face during His time here on earth. These promises also belong to us, as Jesus said, “As You have sent Me into the world, I have sent them into the world.” (John 17:18). What can we learn from God’s promise to Jesus Christ?

- God’s calling is Holy: We see here that God calls His
servant in righteousness. In this we can trust that His purpose in
His calling will be fulfilled.
- Where God calls, He will guide: God promises to take
hold of His servant’s hand. This reassures His servant that God does
not abandon Him in fulfilling His purposes.
- God’s calling will fulfill His purposes: “A covenant
for the people and a light for the Gentiles.” God’s promise of
salvation through Jesus Christ will be given to all nations.
