Colossians 1:15-23
Suby Mathew, St. Johns MTC, NY
"He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.”
In the book of Colossians, Paul takes us back to the basics focusing on the pre-eminence of Christ. He refers to Jesus with words such as “supreme” indicating that He is “above” all others.” Paul proceeds with Jesus being one with God making Him the ultimate.
Paul also states Jesus is the firstborn of all creation. It is important to note that “firstborn” is not in the sense of being born, but in having the claim of authority over all things. The claims of the Father are also the claims of the Son as they are one.
Chances are that if you are reading this, Jesus being Supreme is a pretty obvious notion. However, knowing that Christ is supreme, how should we live? Very simply, we need to trust Him as our Savior. As God, He paid the price for our sins through His sacrifice and resurrection. We ought to worship Him as our God. He created all things and rules in heaven. And we can serve Him as our Lord. His power, authority, holiness, and love are worthy of all our worship and eternal devotion.
Many preach and agree that God is the best. But as a Christian, does our life reflect this very basic notion that Paul is explaining? Today, when we struggle, whether it is significant or trivial, do we turn on our phone and call or text a friend first? Do we turn to some social media for our answers? Does Google have all our answers? Or do we turn to the One who says “I am the way, the truth and the life” and “I created life, designed it and called it into being” Put it that way, the choice is clear to where we should be turning.
When we live our life truly believing that God is our ultimate authority, other believers and non-believers will see Christ's love within us. This belief should emanate from our life including our attitudes and behavior with all people we encounter. Further, our children will learn from us as an example and live their family lives as such. Be an example by trusting Him in ALL that we do, not just when we choose. Worship him in ALL that we do, not just in church and serve him ALWAYS…
As a Christian it is not merely enough to say God is Supreme and Creator of all. This temporary time on earth is our time to live our lives portraying God as the Ruler. We need to pray that this belief is so innate and reflects in EVERYTHING we do.
PRAYER
Abba, help us to live our life everyday, reaffirming the truth of Your supreme authority. Help us to love others as You love us so that others can see You through us. In Jesus name we pray. Amen
