ANNUNCIATION
TO MARY
GENESIS 18: 1-15
V 14 Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the
appointed time I will return to you about this time next year and
Sarah shall have a son.”
This Bible portion depicts God's
promise to make Abraham “a great nation”. God further
promised Abraham and Sarah that they would have a son and would give
rise to nations. Abraham showed great hospitality to his divine
visitors. From Abraham's eagerness to serve them food we can see his
zeal and extraordinary generosity.
After having received his hospitality, the visitors addressed the
purpose for which they came. They inquired for his wife
Sarah. Their calling Sarah by name revealed that the visitors
were heavenly emissaries. They told Abraham that “Behold Sarah
your wife will have a son”. Verse 10 is important to note because the
Lord is talking here proclaiming, “I will certainly come back when the
season comes around”.
At this strange yet divine incident Sarah laughed within herself. She
thought that it was too late for her to have a child. Her
laughter is a contrast to the response we see in Mary the
mother of Jesus. When Mary was told about being with child she replied
without hesitation, “Let it be…”. She willingly yielded to the will of
God. In both the life situations, human impossibility is turned to
possibility by the will of God.
As God moves through the
history, we see that he showed strong preference for marginal people
like Moses, Gideon, David, Sarah, and Mary in fulfilling His divine
purpose. All that they had to do was to respond with faith and
obedience to God’s call. Let us do the same.
PRAYER
Lord, help us to open our hearts and minds to
what you want to place in our lives, Amen.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
The one who created the heavens and earth, and
all that lives therein can surely create another human life at His
will.
