Devotional Text
2 King 4: 16-37 narrates how God restored a Shunammite woman to the fullness of His wholeness. During his ministry, the prophet Elisha journeys through the town of Shunem. Seeing that Elisha is a servant of God and noticing his frequent visits, the woman and her husband built a small room for him to stay. Knowing that the couple is childless, Elisha promised that she will conceive a son within a year. The promise was fulfilled. However, tragedy struck when the child fell ill and died. In her grief and despair, she embarked on a journey with faith to seek the prophet's help and humbly and desperately clung to his feet. Through prayer and unwavering faith, Elisha restored the child to life.
While the primary focus of this story is the miraculous birth and resurrection of the woman’s son, there are deeper dimensions of healing that can be discerned:
Physical Healing: God's provision of a child heals the barrenness that plagued her. The physical healing of the woman's son showcasing God's ultimate power over life and death. This extraordinary physical healing not only restores the child's life but also brings comfort and relief to the grieving mother.
Emotional Healing: In ancient times, barrenness was a source of deep sorrow and was regarded as a curse. The birth of her son not only fulfilled her deepest desire for a child but also provided a profound sense of emotional completeness to her life. The restoration of her son healed her emotional wounds and replaced her sorrow and grief with immense joy and wholeness.
Spiritual Healing: Her personal experience of God's faithfulness in fulfilling her desire strengthened her faith and trust in His providence. The faith she developed through these experiences proved to be a source of comfort and resilience as she faced adversity and setback in the future. Her willingness to seek the servant of God and trust in His divine plan, even in the depths of despair, revealed spiritual healing and restoration.
Jesus’ Approach to Healing
Just as God used Elisha to restore the woman to wholeness, God gives redemption, renewal, and restoration in Jesus Christ. The Gospel accounts describe numerous instances where Jesus performed miraculous healing. His healing approach was unique and comprehensive, encompassing physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions. Physical healing brought immediate relief from illness and restored health. Jesus recognized the profound impact of emotions on overall well-being. He reached out to the marginalized, the brokenhearted, and the oppressed, offering solace and emotional healing. Through genuine care and compassion, Jesus brought comfort and healing to those burdened by emotional pain and trauma. Through His teachings and personal interactions, Jesus revealed the path to spiritual transformation. Spiritual healing offered eternal hope, forgiveness, and a renewed sense of purpose, transforming the lives of individuals and communities.
During this holy season of lent let us embark on a journey of introspection and self-examination. Is there any aspect of our lives that requires healing - be it personal, spiritual, social, or relational? - bring it to Christ. Through Him, we can find the healing and restoration we deeply yearn for. With open arms, He eagerly awaits to initiate the healing process within our physical, spiritual, and emotional realms. These interconnected aspects of healing collectively contribute to a profound and complete transformation. Through humble adoration, repentance, and faith, while acknowledging Him as our Lord and Savior, we can embark on a transformative journey towards holistic healing and a life of abundant wholeness. In Him, we are reborn as new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17).
As followers of Christ, we are called not only to receive this holistic healing, but to be agents of it in the lives of others who are broken and marginalized. Our Churches, communities and families can become spaces where the transformative love of Christ touches the broken, restores the weary, and breathes life into the lifeless.
