 Remember the Poor

Matthew 25:31-40

Devotion

Gospel according to Matthew addressed the early Christian community in a context of persecution and internal divisions. Matthew 25:31-40 is part of a larger discourse often referred to as the "Judgment of the Nations" pericope. It is recorded toward the end of Jesus' teachings in Matthew and focuses on the theme of judgment and eschatology.
The passage challenges the prevailing social order by prioritizing care for the marginalized. It underscores the importance of compassion and service, particularly to those on the margins of society. This would have been radical in the context of the Roman Empire, where societal structures often privileged the wealthy and powerful. The text Is a call to action against systems of oppression that marginalize and exploit the vulnerable.
Jesus, depicted as the Son of Man, identifies with the marginalized and oppressed, symbolized by the hungry, thirsty, stranger, naked, sick, and imprisoned. It highlights the divine preference for the marginalized. It offers a call not only to empathize with the suffering but also to actively work for their liberation and transformation of society. It predicts opportunities for us to engage in concrete acts of demonstrating justice and compassion.
The judgment portrayed in this passage is not merely individual but also societal and systemic. It critiques structures of power and privilege that perpetuate inequality and calls for their transformation.
It invites us to envision Kingdom of God as a realm where justice reigns. We may take part in this blessing when the needs of the marginalized are met by enabling all to have access to resources and dignity. Internalizing the ethic of alleviating suffering and promoting well-being.

Prayer
Our Heavenly Father, Forgive us for our biases. Help us to open our eyes physically and spiritually so that we can see your creation all alike . Amen
