In his first letter to the Corinthian church, the Apostle Paul addresses divisions, moral issues, and erroneous teachings. The purpose of his exhortation, which aims to correct these issues, is clearly articulated in his concluding words.
This passage offers several insights into the mode of theological education:
Relationship as the Foundation of Teaching: Paul's relationship with the Corinthian church is not one of a teacher-student dynamic but rather that of a parent-child relationship. As their spiritual father, Paul’s exhortations stem from the deep bond he shares with them, having brought them the gospel and guided them to faith. His corrections are given in a loving yet firm manner, not to shame or blame the Corinthians, but to realign them with their faith. Teaching from a place of love inherently seeks to enrich and nourish individuals and communities.
The Teacher as the Embodiment of the Content: The teacher's life is as important as the content being taught, as the two are inseparable. The integrity of the teaching is reflected in Paul’s exhortation: “Be imitators of me.” A teacher who not only believes in but lives out what they teach can inspire students beyond mere academic requirements.
In the well-known Indian Gurukula system of education, students lived with their teachers, learning not just from their words but from their way of life. Similarly, Jesus, the ultimate teacher, formed a community of disciples by teaching them how to live the gospel, which was embodied in himself.
