Devotion

In Acts 9:36-39, we find a very brief, yet powerful narrative about a woman named Tabitha, also known as Dorcas. These verses present a profound testament to the impact that she had on the community that she lived in and interacted with. She was a disciple, a Christ-follower, however, the narrative does not highlight whether, she had teaching skills, or preaching prowess, or ability to heal the sick, or her powerful prayer life. Instead, Luke emphasizes her devotion to good works and acts of charity. More than her words, her deeds are highlighted as a testimony of faith in action, characterized by her tireless efforts to help the poor and needy. Tabitha's commitment to service was a lifestyle that focused on those in need. It stemmed from her deep-rooted faith in Christ. Her good works were not just about fulfilling a social obligation but were an integral part of her witness to the Gospel.
The broader impact of Tabitha’s life on the community that she served was most evident after her death. The grief of the community, particularly the widows who showed the garments she had made demonstrated that Tabitha’s life had left a lasting impression, not just on those she helped but on the entire community. Her deeds had become a testament to her faith, serving as a silent yet powerful witness to the love of Christ. When Peter saw the impact of Tabitha’s life and her death, he prayed and miraculously raised her from the dead. This miracle further emphasized the power of faith and the importance of the community's witness. The news of this event spread throughout Joppa, and as a result, many believed in the Lord (Acts 9:42). Thus, Tabitha’s life, her death, and her miraculous resurrection became a powerful witness to the Gospel.
We may think that making an impact in our community or in the lives of the ones we love involves prominent actions like preaching the word of God, or teaching others, or training in Theology, or becoming a lay leader, or being involved in church leadership. Some of us may be called to witness the Gospel through prominent actions, but all of us are called to make small impacts through small actions that show the love of Jesus to those who most need it. Tabitha reminds us that every act of kindness, every word of encouragement, and every step of faith can be a powerful witness to the transformative love of Christ. Tabitha’s life of witness is a reminder that the Gospel is not just something we believe in but something we live out daily, through acts of love, service, and faithfulness.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, help me be a living testament of your deep love that you demonstrated through the sacrifice of your Son, Jesus, on Calvary. Help me live selflessly every day and touch people’s lives so your name may be glorified.
