DEVOTION
The story of Zachariah in the Bible is deeply connected to the assurance of the fulfillment of prophecies, particularly those concerning the coming of the Messiah. The Book of Malachi, the final book of the Old Testament, emphasizes the need for faithfulness to God and highlights a prophecy about a messenger who will prepare the way for the Lord. This prophecy, often interpreted as referring to John the Baptist. Therefore, it is pivotal in understanding the fulfilment of God’s promises.
In Judaism, Malachi’s prophecy (Malachi 3:1; 4:5-6) foretells the return of Elijah before the "great and terrible day of the Lord." Jewish tradition sees Elijah as a forerunner to the Messiah, reconciling families and preparing hearts for the messianic age. This belief is symbolized in the Passover Seder, where a cup of wine is reserved for Elijah, reflecting the hope for his return and the Messiah's arrival.
For us, the fulfillment of this prophecy is seen in the New Testament through John the Baptist. The angel Gabriel told Zachariah that his son, John, would come "in the spirit and power of Elijah" (Luke 1:17). John’s role was to prepare the people for Jesus, calling them to repentance and proclaiming the coming of the Lord. Jesus affirmed this connection, declaring John as the Elijah who was to come (Matthew 11:13-14, 17:11-12). This fulfillment reinforces the reliability of God’s word and His divine plan.
Believers in Jesus Christ hold that the Messiah has already come, fulfilling the prophecies of the Old Testament. Jesus lived, died for humanity’s sins, and was resurrected, providing hope and salvation. As stated in Romans 10:9-10, faith and confession in Jesus as Lord lead to salvation. While Jewish tradition awaits the Messiah's first coming, Christians anticipate His return to restore all things.
The Zachariah story and John the Baptist’s mission emphasize the continuity and fulfillment of God’s promises, encouraging believers to remain steadfast in their faith and ready for Christ’s second coming.
