From Slavery to Freedom in Christ

Bible Reading:  Romans 6:19-23

Key Verse“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” — Romans 6:23

DEVOTION

In Romans 6:19-23 Paul uses the analogy of slavery to help us readers understand the main point in this passage. He tells us that we have a choice of two different masters to follow throughout our lives, one is sin and the other is righteousness. Paul also provides us with the consequences that come with following each master. When we are slaves of sin, we don’t gain anything but actions that we regret and lead to eternal death. This causes us to be in eternal sadness and not be able to reside with God in his holy kingdom.
However, Paul reminds us that Jesus has a way out of that punishment. Jesus, our Lord and Savior died on the cross for our sins and brought us salvation. He freed us from our former master and desires that we become slaves of God so we can reap holiness and receive eternal life. When we reject the master of sin, we have the opportunity to have eternal life and be with God in his kingdom forever.
Today in our daily lives we can be slaves of God by rejecting sin’s service throughout our day. It is also a comfort to know that if we fall into the temptation of sin we can also come running back to God after we ask for forgiveness for our iniquities. We should also make choices throughout our lives so that we can be with God forever at the end of the world.

   PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank you for your son, Jesus, who died on the cross for our sins and brought us salvation. Help us to choose the right choices in our lives so that we will not be slaves of sin but slaves of righteousness. Amen.

Thought for the day

Think about your actions and make sure they are pleasing to God so that you do not fall into sin.
