The Temptation of Complaining and Doubt.
Bible Reading:  Numbers 11:4-15
Numbers 11:11 Moses said to the Lord, 'Why have you dealt ill with your servant? And why have I not found favor in your sight, that you lay the burden of all these people on me?

DEVOTION

In Numbers 11:4-15, we find the Israelites grumbling against God because they were tired of eating manna. They longed for the food they had in Egypt, forgetting that Egypt was a place of slavery. Their complaints displeased the Lord and burdened Moses, who felt overwhelmed by their constant dissatisfaction.
How often do we find ourselves in the same trap? When life becomes difficult, we are tempted to look back at what we left behind, doubting God’s provision. We complain about our current circumstances, forgetting His past faithfulness. Like the Israelites, we focus on what we don’t have instead of being grateful for what God has given us. Complaining is rooted in doubt—it questions God’s goodness and wisdom. When we grumble, we essentially say that God is not enough, that His provision is insufficient. Yet, time and again, He has shown that He is faithful. The Bible reminds us to remember God’s gracious deliverance and redemption from our sinful past through the sacrifice of His Son Jesus Christ.
Moses, overwhelmed by the people’s negativity, cried out to God, expressing his frustration and helplessness. Instead of rebuking Moses, God provided help by appointing seventy elders to share the burden. This reminds us that God doesn’t leave us alone in our struggles. He is patient with us, even when we doubt, and He provides the strength and support we need.
How can we shift our focus from what we lack to what God has already provided? In Hebrews 12:2  we read,” Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” During this lent season let us meditate on the faithfulness of God and cultivate a life of gratitude, which can help combat a complaining mindset.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I complain instead of trusting You. Help me to remember Your past faithfulness and to rely on Your provision. Fill my heart with gratitude and trust, knowing that You are always working for my good. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
